Poppy image

I’ve used the Photoshop CS6 Oil Paint filter and a Topaz Labs* Detail filter as described in the previous post, Using The Oil Paint Filter In Adobe Photoshop CS6 to make this poppy image.

The Texture

I’ve used the Transcend texture from Les Textures II for this image. basically, I used Hue / Saturation adjustment levels to shift the red/orange colors towards magenta and then again to push the top part of the texture towards blue/green. I also duplicated the one adjusted towards magenta, set it to a Blend Mode of Normal and used a layer mask to only cover up some of the stem. I then added a few more touches of blue color around the flower.

I’m not going to go into great detail on this image as it’s rather complicated, but I’m going to show you the layer panel to demonstrate that sometimes you have to push and pull your image and textures to get them the way you want. I’ve grouped the different sections of my layers for a more tidy work space. You may not be able to do this with your version of software and it’s not required.

  1. Group 1: Base edits. Getting the image in shape with burn/dodge and making the background more white.
  2. Group 2: Filters. I then applied the Oil Paint filter in Photoshop CS6 and then the Topaz Labs* Detail 2 with the Creative Detail Accent preset. I also did a few more basic adjustments like burn/dodge and levels
  3. Group 3: Texture Work. See the notes from above on the texture work.
